Finished this small animation piece for my friends at Young over the weekend, for their hugely popular Learn Something Every Day site.

Just finished this piece for ScorchLondon to promote a new iPhone app for the World Cup 2010 by the Telegraph. Mainly a production job, doing all the animation along to the VO, but I also developed the designs from two initial style frames to fill out the 40secs (through the usual struggle with minimal assets).

Mainly After Effects work, though I used Cinema for the phones and waving flags, good old Particular for the confetti and a light garnish of Andrew Kramer’s Optical Flares.

Not much to say about this, it just is what it is. A Compacta Black ampersand, crafted from solid concrete out of a mould made from corrugated cardboard. Though currently just residing, as an ornament, atop my subwoofer next to the telly, I’m sure it’ll find a place wedged between a wide array of subjects. Fish, chips, chalk, cheese, cagney, lacey dungeons, dragons, you name it!

This started out from my initial design and art direction on a job for Maoworks, which I seen through to creating one example of many ‘comparison stories’ they intended to use for an installation in Barclays banks. It was to sit on the queue rail and give people something to do while they queued and was controlled by an external wheel. Due to other work commitments, I couldn’t see it through and I gather it changed quite a bit from my infographics approach to the design and is now installed in one of the Barclays in London.

So, in not wanting to just upload a 1000x1000pixel animation that I’d created for it, I thought I’d put my compositing skills to the test by filming myself pretending to use it on a lightbox and comping the animation in to that footage, along with some other garnish and a great piece of sound design by Bill Walsh of the band North Atlantic Oscillation, with whom future collaborations are on the cards.

This started out as a series of animations I did for CodeComputerlove for a section in their new design of the Brother website (not live yet). But I thought I’d repurpose it into a little HD project, adding the larger messages, ending tag and the Sliced Tomatoes by Just Brothers music.

This just started out as something I thought about while mucking about filming stuff down in Greenwich park in London. Started pottering with the footage to see if I could fob the illusion of the phone actually leaving her hand, then dreamt up the novelty of her reappearing on the screen.

It has no real purpose, just a pure exercise in technique, but was quite fun to create and attempt to nail all the finer details (watch the HD links to see it clearer).

Didn’t really know what to do with it and thought lobbing it up here looping multiple times was a bit dull, so I integrated a little breakdown of the process in the middle. I love watching VFX breakdowns myself so thought I’d share the joy.

I started mucking about with this weeks before I went down and helped Jason and gang shoot the footage for Aneurysm. Since shooting it though, I did’t think it’s really right for the project. Contrasting styles. But I still kinda dig it, so hope it stands out as something on it’s own.

I’d held off on putting it on my site as I felt it wasn’t finished until it had some audio, which I finally got from sound designer, Timo Baker. Adds so much more to it, I reckon. Hoping for future collaborations with this chap.

A large percentage of what I seem to do commercially these days is online media, yet I never show it on here. I suppose I should show more, but most of it’s not that exciting. Only unique thing about this job was that it was direct to client, rather than the way I usually work through agencies. Just a fairly standard banner campaign for the rebranding of DUM and to promote the radio station which is streamed through the banner. Always interesting to work for those crazy Italians though.

Just a quick muck about at the tiltshift timelapse meme. Dunno if I’ve nailed the focal plane, but not to worry, it’s just a bit of fun. The music’s by Japanese popsters Melt Banana.

I shot the photography for Kellogg’s Breakfast Club site a couple of months ago and I see it’s gone live now. Felt really weird being back in a school for the first time in twenty odd years, but was a chuckle doing the shoot and none of us wanted to leave after the bell went for class!
